Mysterious China is still the source of a number of urban legends, but when the above photo began appearing online there were no doubts about it: the sign on the column really says ‘Sex in the gondolas is forbidden to those born in the Nineties’. For a few days improvised sinologists everywhere leashed out against the weird laws in China… until somebody thought of asking to someone who can actually speak the language. It turned out that “people born in the ‘90s” is just the literal translation for “ne’er-do-well youngsters”, so we can stop being scandalized after all. Maybe.
